Important Note! If you downloaded the 3.5 update from this page before 3:20 p.m. U.S. Central Daylight Time on Thursday, 23 April 1998, you need to do the following:
In your TMG/Win program directory (probably C:\TMGW), you'll find a file called OWPF5.DLL. Copy or move it into the WORDPROC subdirectory (probably C:\TMGW\WORDPROC), overwriting the existing file by that name.
Registered users of TMG for Windows can download the update from v3.0 to v3.5 for free. The download is available on the TMG website, in the Wholly Genes file area of the Genealogy Support forum on Compuserve, and, by kind permission of Bob Velke, here below from my website. I have placed a copy of it here solely for the convenience of TMG users who may have trouble obtaining it at the Wholly Genes website because of the traffic jam.
This extensive update includes many new report formats, new import modules, and dozens of new features as requested by TMG users. For details see the update announcment or download the change log.
The update is FREE to registered users of TMG/Win v3.0 if downloaded from this site. You may also purchase new master CDs. New users may purchase TMG/Win v3.5 Silver Edition or Gold Edition by calling 1-800-982-2103 or by contacting a dealer near you. Please allow 3-5 weeks for delivery.
Following are frequently asked questions (FAQs) and answers about the update. Please read them carefully before downloading. Download links follow at the bottom of this page.
Q: What do I need to qualify for this free update?
A: You must have a working installation of TMG/Win v3.0. If you previously performed a "Compact" or "Custom" installation then you should re-install, choosing "Typical" in order to ensure that all of the files are patched. The update overwrites the existing installation.
Q: Do I need a serial number?
A: Yes. Run TMG/Win v3.0 before running the patch and read your serial number from the opening screen.
Q: I participated in the public beta test. Do I need to reinstall TMG/Win v3.0 from CD?
A: Yes. You are encouraged to re-install from CD-ROM in order to ensure that all files are in sync with the public release.
Q: Over time I have downloaded various patches for specific modules from the Wholly Genes web page. Will their presence interfere with the update?
A: No.
Q: How will this update affect my data?
A: Your data is not affected by the patch process itself. However, when you first access your data in v3.5 you will be prompted to back up your data (PLEASE DO SO!) after which it will be updated to reflect the new file structures of v3.5. Thereafter, that data set will in inaccessible from earlier versions of TMG.
Q: I think something went wrong with the download or patching process. Can I download, unzip, and/or apply the update again?
A: Yes. If/when applicable, you will simply receive a notice that certain files have already been updated. If you receive notices that files are of the wrong version then re-install from CD as the baseline for the update. If you are still unable to successfully apply the update, please contact Wholly Genes technical support.
Q: Does this update file contain everything that I need?
A: Ancestry, Inc. has provided an update to its valuable resource, The Source, which is distributed only on CD-ROM and is therefore not included in the downloadable version of v3.5.
[Editor: At this writing, the update also does not contain the new import module for Family Tree Maker(tm). That element will be available in a few days as a separate download. Those who previously volunteered to be final testers will receive it by e-mail.]
Q: Can I purchase new master CDs for TMG/Win v3.5?
A: Yes. Registered users can purchase new v3.5 master (2) CDs for $19.95 plus shipping (whether or not you download the patch). To place an order for the CDs, call 1-800-982-2103 or e-mail 76366.1760@compuserve.com. If ordering by e-mail, please watch for an acknowledgement by return e-mail to confirm your order. PLEASE ALLOW 3-5 WEEKS FOR DELIVERY.
Q: What do I need to download exactly?
A: First you need to read the installation instructions. The update itself is available is two forms: a single large file or a series of smaller files. If your online connection is slow or unreliable, we recommend that you download the collection of smaller files. In the event of a download problem, you will not have to start over from the beginning.
[Laura's note: I do not have the smaller files available here. If you want to download the smaller files you will have to do so from the Wholly Genes website.]
