There is a link below to the alphabet I found most
helpful with this transcription. The 1904 date on the first page suggests that the info may have been copied from another book later, but there is internal evidence that either it was copied verbatim, or that the text on this page, as well as the dates, places, and child numbers listed at the top of each page, were added later. I am assuming that this book is in Peter's own hand. Another interpretation might be that someone else wrote it, and this page is his obituary-- except that he died in 1907. Furthermore, Veronica calls this book The Time Record Book of Peter Brisbois. It was her principal source of data (and thus passed on to Robert Wagner, and thence to us). |

Mankato 1875 19 Januar wahr unser Hochzeit tag Piter Brisbois Mit Elisabeth Schaus |
Mankato 1875 January was our Wedding day Peter Brisbois with Elisabeth Schaus |
Also note the mistaken 9 changed to an 8 in "1875," which suggests that this was copied after the writer was used to writing "190x" instead of "18xx." |

Ana Mary Brisbois died the 4th of August 1879 at 11 o'clock in the morning at the age of 3 years and 8 months and 20 days. Buried in Shakopee Min. |
I think the curilcue at the end of "Morgen" is simply a flourish rather than a "d" or any other letter. It recurs too frequently to make sense otherwise. Or it's possible that he really did mean "Morgend," which is an archaic colloquialism meaning "tomorrow morning." |

Mankato Der Geburtstag unser 2 Tochter Barbara Brisbois 15 Januar 1877 Nachenistag um 3 uhr Getauft in Peter und Paul Kirche in Mankato Taufpaten Barbara Schaus und Leopolt Bietch |
Mankato The birthday of our second daughter Barbara Brisbois 15 January 1877 at 3 o'clock in the middle of the night. Baptized in Peter and Paul Church in Mankato. Godparents Barbara Schaus and Leopold Bietch. |
"Nachenistag" or "Nachenitag" isn't in any dictionary, but I think it probably means "in the middle of the night. It might, however, refer to 3pm, which would be in dusk or darkness that far north. So perhaps it is more literal than I have interpreted it, "during the Night-Day." |

But in May, wouldn't both 7:30am and 7:30pm be in daylight? Notice that on July 30th he uses the word "evening" for 11pm. Long days! |

First time Peter uses "in the morning" for the wee hours, instead of some variation of "Nachenistag." |

6th and 7th child 1884 Minneapolis 22 August The birthday of our two children the 22nd of August 1884 at 5 o'clock in the morning. Baptized in the Boniface Church in Minneapolis. God parents Jan Schmuth and Maria Katherine Gillet and (rather for) Jan Alosius Brisbois, and Tilda Brisbois's godparents Nicholas Kieffer and Margaret Gillet. Died the 5th of September 1884. |
This is a little hard to figure out as it's just a list of names linked
with "and," but I think the babies must have been named Jan Alosius and
Mathilde. Veronica names them Jon and Margarata Tilie. Also note that Tilda's name is given without "Margaret" before it. Veronica may have inserted "Margaret," assuming that Tilde was named after her godmother. There were two Margaret Gillets, and one was Margaret Mathilda. Note that Ida's sponsor (next child) is listed as "Tilli Gillet." Veronica got all her dates from this Date Book and yet she says that Tilda died not on the 5th of Sept, but on the 13th. She may have had another source (like a funeral card) for the name and date discrepancies but I am surprised Peter did not record a second date if there was one. |

10th Child 1889 Mankato 1 July The birthday of our son Frank Theodore Brisbois the 1st of July 1889 in the morning at 6 o'clock. Godparents Frank Joseph Gapter and Elizabeth Zellmer. |
"Gapter" could be Gapser, Gopter, Gopser, Gahser, Gahter, etc. As time passed, Peter started writing some (but not all) of his "e"s and "r"s the way we do. |

11 und 12 Kind 1891 Mankato 15 Okt Der Geburtstag unser 2 Kinder Der 15 Okt 1891 1/4 bis 9 uhr Morgen Teodor Willhelm Brisbois und Ana Elisabeth Brisbois 1/4 bis 12 vormittag geborne Taufpaten Teodor Zelmenr und Ana Meixner und Ana Zelmner |
11th and 12th Child 1891 Mankato 15 Oct The birthday of our two children the 15 Oct 1891 1/4 to 9 o'clock in the morning Theodore William Brisbois, and Ana Elizabeth Brisbois 1/4 to 12 before noon was born. Godparents Theodore Zelmner and Ana Meixner and Ana Zelmner. |
Peter never uses the word "twins," always instead "our two
children." The first Zelmner looks like "-menr" while the second looks like "-mner" (and the "e"s and "r"s are all traditional, not modern). Also, although he says "und" here, Meixner might be Ana Zelmner's maiden name. |

13th Child 1894 Mankato 31 Oct The birthday of our son Charles Joseph Brisbois 31 Oct 1894 in the morning at 1/2 past 2 o'clock. Godparents Joseph Schaus and Ana Zelmer. |
Compare this spelling of Zelmer to the previous three, and note modern
"e." Also, he says "2 o'clock in the morning" here instead of using the word "Nachenistag." These are both evidence that the main text may be contemporary, not copied later. |
